Opening Remarks

Welcome to the Symposium on
"Korea–Europe Cooperation in a Rapidly Changing International Order".

The main theme of this symposium is to explore the future direction of cooperation between Korea and Europe in the context of growing uncertainty in global politics.
Ongoing geopolitical tensions—including the Russia–Ukraine war, the US–Iran conflict, and intensifying US–China strategic competition—are reshaping the international environment and challenging the stability of the rules-based order.
In this context, Korea and Europe, as partners sharing a commitment to liberal democracy and international norms, face common challenges and opportunities.
This symposium brings together scholars from leading European universities and research institutions to discuss key issues such as security and peace on the Korean Peninsula, the transformation of the international order, and the pressures facing democratic systems today.
Furthermore, the Expert Roundtable will provide an opportunity for Korean scholars based in Europe to offer their perspectives on Korea’s political and diplomatic role, while exploring new avenues for academic exchange and policy cooperation between Korea and Europe.
We hope this symposium will serve as a meaningful platform to deepen understanding and strengthen collaboration in addressing shared global challenges.
Thank you for your participation, and we look forward to fruitful discussions.

Congratulatory Speech

Distinguished scholars, guests, and participants,

On behalf of Seoul National University, I would like to extend my sincere congratulations on the opening of the symposium, “Korea–Europe Cooperation in a Rapidly Changing International Order,” hosted by the Institute for Future Strategy.
I am delighted to see distinguished scholars, diplomats, and experts from Korea and Europe gathered here today to discuss some of the most pressing challenges facing the international community. At a time of increasing geopolitical uncertainty and rapid global transformation, opportunities for international dialogue and intellectual cooperation are more important than ever.
Korea and Europe have long maintained close partnerships based on shared values, mutual trust, and a commitment to international cooperation. I believe this symposium will provide an important opportunity to strengthen those connections further by encouraging meaningful discussions on security, democracy, and the future direction of the international order.
As a leading academic institution, Seoul National University remains committed to promoting global academic exchange and fostering collaborative research that contributes to peace, stability, and mutual understanding. In this regard, I highly appreciate the efforts of the Institute for Future Strategy in organising this timely and meaningful symposium.
I would also like to express my sincere appreciation to His Excellency the Ambassador of Germany for graciously delivering today’s keynote address. My gratitude further extends to all speakers, participants, and organisers whose dedication and contributions have made this symposium possible.
I hope that the discussions and exchanges over the course of this symposium will lead to valuable insights, lasting partnerships, and continued cooperation between Korea and Europe.
Once again, congratulations on the opening of this symposium, and I wish you all a productive and successful gathering. Thank you.
